When you're spending meaningful money on a desk accessory, the manufacturing method matters — perhaps more than any other single factor. Here's what the difference between CNC-machined and injection-moulded desk toys actually means for spin time, longevity, and feel.
What Is CNC Machining?
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a subtractive manufacturing process. A solid block of raw material — aluminium, titanium, brass, or stainless steel — is cut, milled, and shaped by computer-controlled tools to exact tolerances. The result is a component that is:
- Dimensionally accurate to fractions of a millimetre
- Free from the flow lines and sink marks common in injection moulding
- Structurally solid throughout (no hollow walls or variable density)
